Deborah Lambert Memorial Scholarship

In honor of Deborah Lambert (SWANA Washington Evergreen Chapter President 2002-2005), and the many years she dedicated to the solid waste management field, the Chapter is pleased to offer scholarships to qualified undergraduate and graduate students. Between 2003 and 2021, the Evergreen Chapter has awarded nearly $133,000 in scholarships to 93 students.

Scholarship Categories

General Scholarship – up to $1,500

For students in any program of study

Environmental Scholarship – up to $2,500

For students pursuing a degree in environmental science, environmental studies, engineering, or another major applicable to the field of solid waste or resource management

Eligibility for Washington Evergreen Chapter Scholarships

  • Must be accepted or enrolled at a college, university, or graduate school for fall 2023.
  • Must be the child or grandchild of a SWANA member in good standing or a student member prior to application. Becoming a student member is free—visit SWANA’s membership page to join.
  • Priority will be given to students who have not won multiple Evergreen chapter scholarships.
  • Students who have been awarded Evergreen chapter scholarships totaling $6,000 or more are not eligible.

Criteria for Award Selection

CriteriaExamples

Community & Extracurricular Activities (40%) Volunteering, employment or internships, athletics, music, civic or religious organizations, activism, ROTC or military service, etc.

SWANA International Scholarship Opportunities

SWANA International offers four competitive scholarships:

  • Grant H. Flint International Scholarship – Category I: Up to $5,000 for graduating high school seniors interested in any major
  • Grant H. Flint International Scholarship – Category II: Up to $5,000 for college or university students entering their junior or senior year and majoring in environmental science, engineering, or another major related to solid waste management
  • Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship: Up to $5,000 for students entering or already in graduate school pursuing a degree in environmental science, engineering, or another field related to solid waste management
  • Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship: Up to $5,000 for college or university students entering their junior or senior year, pursuing a degree applicable to solid waste management, and intending to work in the field of solid waste. Preference will be given to students at Northeastern University, but past winners have attended other schools.

Applicants must

  • be accepted or enrolled at a college, university, or graduate school for fall 2023
  • be the child or grandchild of a SWANA member OR be a SWANA student member (becoming a SWANA student member is free)
  • have strong academic records and involvement in community and extracurricular activities
